The Dnipro International Airport is completely destroyed by a Russian missile strike. Five people are injured.

The airport is currently owned by its major airline partner Dniproavia. This has resulted in a number of management problems and has slowed the airfield’s development as Dniproavia has, on a number of occasions, refused to be forthcoming with the required funds to undertake a comprehensive modernization program. In addition to this, foreign airlines have found it difficult to gain access to Dnipro as a result of Dniproavia’s protectionist policies along routes to and from the airport. These problems are now only of academic importance as a Russian missile strike destroyed this prominent Ukrainian transport hub.

Israel in Turmoil

The governing coalition of Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett loses its majority in the Knesset after coalition whip Idit Silman of the Yamina party defects to the opposition Likud party, raising the possibility of new elections in Israel for the fifth time in four years.

Following a fragile existence of a coalition representing many opposing members, the Israel government looks finally set to collapse. A major stumbling block is the settlement issue, whereby the present coalition has followed Biden’s lead in continuing to ostracize a major part of Israel’s population labeled as settlers. Israeli PM Bennett has been previously regraded as a central figure in support of the mainly right wing settlement movement. His party ‘Yamina’ (the right wing) has suffered a key set back as Idit Silman, a long standing member of Yamina defected, citing the lack of settlement support as the main reason for her decision.

This move also suggests a rocky road ahead for the Biden administration that has reversed President Trump’s policies in favor of the Israeli right. The prospects of another election is not greeted with much enthusiasm in Israel due to recent polls suggesting that neither the right or left wings have enough votes to secure a majority.

Could Lebanon’s Bankruptcy Cause Wider Problems

In an unsurprising announcement, Lebanon Deputy PM Saadeh Al Shami says that Lebanon and its central bank are bankrupt. While this expected turn of events was foreseen, what is still unclear is the extent of civil unrest could be unleashed in the once prosperous nation.

Iran has vested interest in Lebanon, along with its often ally Syria. These foreign entities in turn are subject to Russian influence. While the focus of world financial donors rests upon Ukraine, questions arise as to whether any will exists to bail out Lebanon. Any financial aid package would have political strings attached that do not bode well for the terrorist entity Hizbollah, which is deeply entrenched within Lebanon. There has been a series of mass public protests aimed against the government’s handling of the financial situation. Hizbollah, with its Iranian and Syrian ties has tended to sidestep its draining of the local economy to channel funds for its terrorist activities. It remains to be seen in light of the current deterioration of financial events whether the government can be held together, and specially with its terrorist entity still maintaining power in the country. This leads to the question of how Russia, with its own economic concerns, could help to prop up Lebanon, and if not, which power could fill such a vacuum.

A ceremony is held to honour the staff at the former plant who continued to work under Russian occupation. Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling is an exhibition of contemporary paintings and personal narratives, by artist Jacqueline Kott-Wolle, exploring the key people, experiences, and community that shaped her distinctly North American brand of Jewish identity. Kott-Wolle, who came of age in the late 20th century, draws upon decades of family photos for inspiration. The exhibit includes playful images of Jewish holiday and ritual observances; moments at Hebrew school and summer camp; vacations as well as milestone celebrations marked by the artist’s family through the years. Paired with the artist’s own narration, Kott-Wolle asks ‘what does it mean to be Jewish for past, present and future generations in North America?’Kott-Wolle’s Jewish identity was informed by the experiences of her parents and grandparents who arrived in Canada in 1949 after the Holocaust. As a member of the ‘Second Generation’ the artist also reflects on how her forebears faced the enormous task of starting over upon surviving one of modern history’s darkest chapters. The exhibit includes paintings of this colorful cast of characters as they rebuild their lives and flourish in North America’s vibrant Jewish communities.

Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling speaks to the resilience of newcomers who must navigate a painful past, contend with tradition and summon optimism for the future. Painted in a fresh palette of color, Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling traces the story of one North American Jewish family through five generations from 1925 to the present.

Jacqueline has exhibited her work in both group and solo exhibitions and lectures frequently for many organizations about her current exhibit “Growing Up Jewish – Art & Storytelling”, most notably for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Museum of Jewish Heritage NYC. Jacqueline’s works are in private collections throughout the United States, Canada and Israel.

Global warming may not be amusing or surprising but it is still the most important thing that’s happening at this moment. Contemporary climate change includes both global warming and its impacts on Earth’s weather patterns. There have been previous periods of climate change, but the current changes are distinctly more rapid and not due to natural causes. Instead, they are caused by the emission of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane. Burning fossil fuels for energy use creates most of these emissions. Agriculture, steelmaking, cement production, and forest loss are additional sources. Greenhouse gases are transparent to sunlight, allowing it through to heat the Earth’s surface. When the Earth emits that heat as infrared radiation the gases absorb it, trapping the heat near the Earth’s surface. As the planet heats up it causes changes like the loss of sunlight-reflecting snow cover, amplifying global warming.

On land, temperatures have risen about twice as fast as the global average. Deserts are expanding, while heat waves and wildfires are becoming more common. Increased warming in the Arctic has contributed to melting permafrost, glacial retreat and sea ice loss. Higher temperatures are also causing more intense storms and other weather extremes. Rapid environmental change in mountains, coral reefs, and the Arctic is forcing many species to relocate or become extinct. Climate change threatens people with food and water scarcity, increased flooding, extreme heat, more disease, and economic loss. Human migration and conflict can be a result. The World Health Organization calls climate change the greatest threat to global health in the 21st century. Even if efforts to minimise future warming are successful, some effects will continue for centuries. These include sea level rise, and warmer, more acidic oceans.

Many of these impacts are already felt at the current level of warming (1.2 °C). Additional warming will increase these impacts and may trigger tipping points, such as the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, nations collectively agreed to keep warming “well under 2 °C”. However, with pledges made under the Agreement, global warming would still reach about 2.7 °C by the end of the century. Limiting warming to 1.5 °C will require halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Are All Trees Created Equal?

Great news! Haven’t you heard? The international public protests were successful. Here’s proof that the world has a heart. The campaign to save Anne Frank’s tree, the one she saw from the window of her hideout, was a success. It reminds me of the hysteria of an idealistic anti-settler sentiment, after they discovered that some of the Jews who had been forcibly evicted from their homes in Gush Katif and northern Samaria – due to an anti-settlement disengagement plan – had “cruelly and irresponsibly abandoned their pet dogs.” Of course, those very same “humanists” didn’t think it cruel that the government had evicted those same innocent Jews from their homes, destroyed their businesses, farms, trees and gardens. Minor details, like the dog owners’ being homeless – most temporarily housed in small, no-animals-allowed hotel rooms – didn’t excuse them.

Why is that diseased tree in Amsterdam more valuable than the ones lovingly planted by Jews in N’vei Dekalim? There were beautiful trees and gardens in the communities destroyed in the name of Disengagement. There were excellent schools in the communities destroyed in the name of Disengagement. There were successful businesses in the communities destroyed in the name of Disengagement. Where were the international protests – Why is that a diseased tree in Amsterdam more valuable than the ones lovingly planted by Jews in N’vei Dekalim, Homesh and Atzmona ?

Before Disengagement, I was in New York for family reasons, kibbud av v’em, and I spent Shabbat in a couple of active and prominent Orthodox communities. My various hosts, whom I have known well for decades, were all 100% against Disengagement, so I was shocked that the issue and its danger to the security and existence of the State of Israel was ignored in their rabbis’ sermons. I must tell you what really hurt the most. There we were during the Three Weeks leading up to Tisha B’Av, when we’re mourning the destruction of our Holy Temples due to the sins between man and his fellow man, and the theme of the sermons was Darfur. The poor unfortunate Darfurians. The only acts of charity many rabbis could think of concerned African refugees. They weren’t concerned that thousands of innocent fellow Jews in Israel were soon to be made homeless, unemployed refugees. American Jews I spoke to knew nothing of any protests. Why does that tree mean more to people than all the vibrant Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria? Why do people ignore the dangers to the State of Israel?
